Voter-Owned Elections Lobby Day
Welcome to the 2009 Voter-Owned Elections Lobby Day

Welcome to the 2009 Voter-Owned Elections Lobby Day!

This June 17th NC Voters for Clean Elections and its partners will bring people from every part of North Carolina to Raleigh in order to advocate for a freer and fairer way of financing elections.
Register here.

We will be calling for an alternative, public way of financing elections that values voters over dollars and community support over PAC endorsements.

Called Voter-Owned Elections by us and Clean Elections by others, this system of public campaign financing is a proven way of reducing candidate’s reliance on fundraising from special interest groups, opening up the political process to more candidates and voters, and allowing our government officials to be more accountable to the public.

But for legislators to expand this concept they need to hear from their constituents.

Register to attend Voter-Owned Elections Lobby Day.

At this year’s lobby day we will be advocating for two significant pieces of legislation.  The first, SB-966 Expanded Voter-Owned Elections would expand our state’s successful Council of State program to additional offices.  The second, HB-120 Public Municipal Campaigns, would allow cities with more than 50,000 residents to create local public financing programs.

Both of these bills have made significant progress already this year and are at crucial places in the legislative process.  They both have a strong chance of passing this year and becoming one of our coalition’s biggest victories of the decade.  However, without an outcry of public support, these bills could also languish.

That’s where you come in.  We need you to spend a few hours with us on June 17th and help us push these bills over the edge.

Details:  Coffee will be served at 9am and our orientation will be from 9:30-10:30. Boxed lunches with be provided from 12-1 in the 1200 court of the Legislative Bldg. Click here for more logistical information.

The event is being sponsored by all of our coalition partners, including the League of Women Voters, Democracy North Carolina, the NC Center for Voter Education, Common Cause NC, AARP-NC, the NC Council of Churches, the NAACP of NC, the NC Association of Educators, and the NC Justice Center.  For a full list of partners click here.

Candidates for State Treasurer and Commissioner of Labor shouldn’t have to rely on the groups they regulate or do business with to run for office.  Municipalities should have the authority to enact public financing programs that make local elections more accountable to the citizenry.
